In Spanish, Tejas means friend. But this is no Mexican restaurant. This, my friend, is the made-from-scratch, Texas-inspired kitchen nestled in the corner of Pierremont Square. Don’t let the parking deter you. This place (and its neighbors) draws a crowd, and for good reason. It’s worth the walk!

When I say “made from scratch,” I mean this entire restaurant is made from scratch. Weston, the chef/owner/welder/farmer/woodworker/plumber, has made nearly everything, from the bar to the light fixtures to the toilet roll holders.

By myself, with dates, with parents, with friends, there has not been an occasion that Tejas didn’t fit the spec for. I’ve recommended it to my foodie friends from other cities, and they agree Tejas is the place to be.

My favorite app is the Tuna Tower: tortillas piled high with sesame-crusted, seared tuna and avocado and more.

My personal favorite entrée is the “Shrimp and Grits,” which aren’t really on grits at all. Instead, they’re flame-grilled and lined across a plate full of house-made chorizo cream corn, a side dish that this place is locally famous for.

The Tuna Stack features rare, chili & lime grilled tuna served with guacamole, tortilla chips & black bean pico, and sweet chili & lime sauce.

Heck, just get anything with a side of the chorizo cream corn. At times, I’ve gone in and just had chorizo cream corn. I’m convinced it will cure what ails you.

My favorite dessert is the crème brûlée, and that, my friend, is my idea of the perfect meal.

Regardless of what you order, you’ll find a special touch or twist on any dish that reminds you it’s Tejas. Brisket-topped burgers, hand-pounded chicken fried steak with jalapeño gravy. Everything on the menu is Texan-inspired.

Even one of my favorite fried shrimp po-boys in town is served here on a Texas “Mesquite Sweet” bun that bucks the norm and changed my mind about po-boys only being served on Leidenheimer bread.

It’s served on a quarter sheet with a pile of hand-cut, skin-on fries that are doubly delicious with the truffle and garlic aioli.

This place definitely makes my Texas-born, Louisiana-raised heart pitter-patter faster than a jackrabbit. There’s nothing Mexican about it but the nachos, but those are mighty good here, too, friend!

Check their website for their hours and stop by 855 Pierremont Rd. They’re available for delivery through On The Go Delivery, too.
