Louisiana Downs is once again welcoming racing fans for its 2026 Thoroughbred racing season, which continues through Sept. 30.

For more than five decades, Louisiana Downs has remained one of the most recognizable entertainment destinations in northwest Louisiana. Since opening in 1974, the Bossier City venue has welcomed generations of racing fans, horsemen and visitors while helping establish Louisiana as a major player in Southern Thoroughbred racing.

Over the years, the track has hosted some of horse racing’s most respected trainers, jockeys and horses, while also becoming a longtime gathering place for local families and visitors throughout the region. The facility’s signature events, including the Super Derby, helped place Louisiana Downs on the national racing map and cemented its reputation within the sport.

Today, Louisiana Downs offers much more than live horse racing. The property combines racing, casino gaming, dining and entertainment into a year-round experience for guests.

Visitors can enjoy a casino floor filled with slot machines and electronic gaming, along with simulcast wagering that allows guests to bet on races from tracks across the country. The facility also features multiple dining options ranging from casual food and drinks to elevated race-day experiences overlooking the track.

Guests can enjoy casual dining at Champion’s Café, known for its Cowboy Creole cuisine, deli selections and popular shrimp po-boys, or stop by the Paddock Bar & Deli for quick bites and drinks while watching the races. Visitors looking for upscale cuisine can dine at Lucky Palace, while Brew offers coffee and craft beer selections. Families can also enjoy Scoops & Slices, featuring freshly made pizza and hand-dipped ice cream.

On live racing days, fans can experience the excitement from the grandstand while enjoying food, beverages and close-up views of the action. The venue’s clubhouse and event spaces have also made it a popular destination for parties, corporate gatherings and community events throughout the year.

This year’s meet is expected to feature another competitive field of trainers and jockeys, including returning trainer Jonathon Wong alongside nationally recognized horsemen Steve Asmussen and Shane Wilson. Fans will also see several familiar faces in the jockey colony, including Rey Williams, reigning leading rider Joel Dominguez and Hall of Fame jockey and three-time Kentucky Derby winner Calvin Borel.

“Our horsemen and horsewomen are dedicated to our racetrack, and we are thrilled they make their way here year after year,” Director of Racing Roxanne Tanner said. “The team at Louisiana Downs is always excited to kick off the timeless tradition of the Thoroughbred meet and looking forward to seeing race fans return.”

Fans can experience live horse racing at Louisiana Downs through Sept. 30.

In addition to live racing, Louisiana Downs continues offering fan-focused events throughout the season.

The track will host its Independence Weekend Fireworks Show following races on Friday, July 3, as well as the popular Wiener Dog Charity Races on Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 7.

Those special events have become a major part of the Louisiana Downs experience, helping introduce new generations to horse racing while creating a festival-like atmosphere throughout the season.

Beyond the track itself, Louisiana Downs continues to play an important role in the local economy and entertainment landscape, drawing visitors from across Louisiana, Texas and Arkansas.

“The start of a new meet is always exciting especially after a promising 2025 meet,” Louisiana Downs President Kevin Preston said. “We are thrilled to welcome back leading trainer Jonathon Wong along with top trainers Steve Asmussen and Shane Wilson racing with us again this year, in addition to our premier jockey colony featuring Rey Williams, 2025 leading rider Joel Dominguez and Hall of Fame and three-time Kentucky Derby winner Calvin Borel. We are proud to continue building Louisiana Downs as a premier racing and entertainment destination.”

Officials say they are looking forward to welcoming horsemen, fans and the community back for another season filled with racing traditions, special events and memorable moments.
