A surprise tribute awaited Shreveport First Lady Elizabeth Arceneaux on Thursday following the ribbon cutting for the newly rehabilitated West Shreveport Water Tower.

During a reception hosted by the American Rose Society at the American Rose Center, Executive Director Beth Smiley and Board President Quintin Hardtner unveiled the newly dedicated “First Lady’s Garden,” honoring Arceneaux’s longtime support of the community and her appreciation for the beauty and heritage of the Shreveport Rose.

The garden was made possible through a donation from Arceneaux’s son, Jordan Montgomery Lewis. It features 22 newly planted Shreveport Rose bushes and will serve as a lasting tribute on the grounds of the American Rose Center.

The dedication followed the city’s celebration marking the completion of the West Shreveport Water Tower rehabilitation project. The tower’s newly painted Shreveport Rose design has quickly become a recognizable symbol of community pride and provided a fitting backdrop for a day centered on one of the city’s most recognizable icons.

Guests gathered at the American Rose Center to celebrate both the completion of the tower project and the dedication of the garden, recognizing the role the Shreveport Rose has played in the city’s identity.

The American Rose Society introduced the Shreveport Rose in 1974. Thursday’s dedication further strengthened the connection between the city, the American Rose Center and the flower that bears Shreveport’s name.
