One of Shreveport’s newest grassroots community movements, Shreveport Steps, began as a simple quest for connection.
Founded this summer by local educator Carol Ann Dominick, Shreveport Steps is a walking group designed to bring together people of all ages, backgrounds and fitness levels.
“It’s really just a place for people to come together as a community, meet new people, socialize, make new friends, and exercise,” she said.
Carol Ann was away in Baton Rouge for several years while she attended LSU and later taught school. Upon her return to her hometown of Shreveport, she realized it was difficult to make new connections as an adult.
Walking with friends had already become a regular part of her routine. She wondered if a walking group could become a way for more people to connect.
She discovered that Baton Rouge and Dallas have thriving walking communities and decided to start one in Shreveport.
“We’re big enough that there are so many people you may not know, but small enough that we can still have that genuine sense of community,” she said.
The group launched in June with about 20 participants and has grown far beyond what its founder initially expected. The last outing included about 60 walkers.
While the walks remain the organization’s primary focus, Shreveport Steps has already begun expanding its impact through community service initiatives such as a back-to-school supply drive during a walk at Betty Virginia Park.
The group also supports area businesses during walks, with stops on recent walks that included Marilyn’s Place, Lululemon and HOTWORX.
For Carol Ann, the rapid growth of Shreveport Steps has been both exciting and humbling. What started as a summer project has become a growing network of people seeking connection in an increasingly busy world.
She credits much to her faith journey, which played a significant role in her decision to launch the group.
“I felt like if God puts something on your heart, it’s important to trust Him and take those steps,” she said.
