For nearly a decade, Skylar Souyoul, MD, has worked with patients to diagnose and treat conditions affecting the skin, hair and nails.
Now, the dermatologist and founder of Souyoul Dermatology & Aesthetics is bringing that experience to her own skincare line, SKYN.
Souyoul completed four years of medical school at Tulane University in New Orleans before completing a one-year internal medicine internship and three-year dermatology residency at LSU in New Orleans.
During her residency, she trained in medical, surgical and cosmetic dermatology and served as chief resident during her final year.
“I’ve been a dermatologist for almost a decade. Becoming one requires eight years of rigorous training after college to ensure dermatologists are equipped to diagnose and treat everything from skin cancer to complex conditions of the hair, skin, and nails,” Souyoul said.
Her experience in the exam room helped inspire the development of SKYN.
Souyoul said she frequently encountered patients who were either using products without evidence-based science behind them or had accumulated products they had stopped using.
“For years I have listened to patients who were either using products with no evidence-based science or had drawers full of abandoned products they’d given up on. I wanted to offer a collection of skincare that was made with quality ingredients, were easy to use, and provided real results,” she said.
The name SKYN is personal to Souyoul. It was inspired by the nickname “Sky,” which is used by her family and friends, and represents her commitment to helping people maintain healthy skin.
Each SKYN product is hand-selected and personally tested by Souyoul.
The collection features medical-grade ingredients and is manufactured in the United States.
Souyoul partnered with a laboratory with more than 40 years of experience in skincare research and development to formulate products designed to be safe, effective, hypoallergenic and non-comedogenic.
As a dermatologist, Souyoul said her clinical experience plays a central role in how the products are formulated and selected.
“As a dermatologist I understand how each active ingredient works and which ones best address different skincare concerns. I built SKYN around that real-world experience,” she said.
Rather than following trends or creating lengthy routines, the line focuses on products intended to address specific concerns while keeping skincare simple.
“The collection contains products that solve specific concerns without adding unnecessary ingredients or steps to someone’s routine. Whether it’s hydration, firmness, or pores, Skyn is meant to feel like an extension of the advice I give in my office. Simple, effective, and rooted in real science, not trends,” Souyoul said.
Among the collection’s most popular products is the Retinol Body Lotion, which Souyoul said patients particularly enjoy using on their arms.
The product is designed to improve skin texture and appearance while helping reduce the skin fragility that can contribute to bruising as people age.
The DayNight Eye Ritual is another customer favorite, with patients praising both its results and hydrating feel.
Souyoul said the product is also gentle enough for sensitive skin.
For those building a skincare routine, Souyoul recommends resisting the temptation to use a large number of products.
“Simple is better. Most people see better results from three well-chosen products used consistently than ten products used inconsistently,” she said.
She also cautions against choosing products based solely on recommendations from friends or social media trends.
“The biggest mistake I see is people buying products because it worked for their friend or they saw it trending on TikTok. Everyone’s skin is different, so what works for someone else may not work, or could even cause more problems. Consult a dermatologist or aesthetician who can help you pick products that are right for your skin type and concerns,” Souyoul shared.
With SKYN, Souyoul is applying nearly a decade of dermatology experience to a collection designed to make effective skincare more approachable, targeted and rooted in science.
